Act Fast
As with most stains, the faster you get cleaning, the lower the chances are that the stain will stick to the fibers of the carpet, making it harder to clean.
If you start cleaning the stain as soon as it hits the carpet, you will have more success at getting rid of the stain, and while using less effort.
Soak It Up
If the stain is still wet and fresh, use a paper towel or a cloth to blot up as much of the food color as possible. Be careful not to rub the stain since this would only help to work it into the carpet fibers making it harder to remove.
For dry food color stains, cover the stain with a damp cloth. Apply pressure to the area using your palm to absorb as much of the color as possible. When color is transferred to the cloth, rinse it and replace it with a new one. This ensures you don't transfer the stain to other areas of the carpet.
For powder food color, you can use a spoon to scoop up the excess powder. When using a spoon, start from the edges and work your way to the center. After picking up most of the powder, you can use a vacuum cleaner to pick up any other traces. Check out our vacuum guide for elderly
Cleaning the Stain
Even for powder food color, there's a fair chance some stains will be left on the carpet. You don't want that. There are several cleaning solutions you can use to remove the stain. The ideal one depends on the color and type of carpet you have.
Because food color is water-soluble, the best product to use is club soda. It works excellent on water-soluble stains. Because this is an ordinary carbonated soda, it's doesn't damage the carpet or it's backing, so you have nothing to worry about.
You only need a small amount, so be cautious not to wet the carpet. Another advantage of using club soda is the fact that it doesn't leave a residue, so you don't have to worry about rinsing the carpet after using it.
You can also use it as a rinsing agent for other cleaners! Once you pour the soda over the stain, all you have to do is blot out the excess after letting it sit for a few minutes.
Hydrogen Peroxide Solution For Coloring Out of Carpet
If you have a light-colored carpet, you have probably used the hydrogen peroxide concoction to vanquish a variety of stains. This mixture also works on food color stains on your carpet. To make the solution, you will mix one tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 3 tablespoons of warm water. Sprinkle the mixture on the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes.
After the 30 minutes, cover the stain with a thick towel to block out the light. Without light, the properties of hydrogen peroxide change. But, you need to keep checking on the progress once in a while. This trick will work on most of the stains.
Ammonia and Vinegar mix Coloring Out of Carpet
If the stain is proving stubborn, there are two more tricks and cleaning solutions you can try. The first is mixing clear ammonia and warm water in a ratio of 1:4 parts, respectively. Keep in mind, like hydrogen peroxide, ammonia also has a bleaching effect, so this only works on bright colored carpets. Use the same process as with hydrogen peroxide above.
Finally, you can also use a 1:4 ratio of vinegar to water to make another solution that can also deal with food color stains on your carpet. The application is the same, but with vinegar, you might want to clean the carpet after that to get rid of the smell.
Even though food color stains are dreaded, they are one of the easiest stains to remove when you have the right tips and products. As you can see, there's barely any scrubbing involved in removing the stain, and there are plenty of methods you can try.
